Becoming Certified

WQA Professional Certification is achieved by completing the requirements listed below.

Core Level

  1. Select the core certification title to pursue. See About WQA Professional Certification for titles and descriptions. 
  2. Complete the appropriate course work in the WQA's modular education program on water treatment for the core certification selected. The coursework includes all the courses for the Basics and Fundamentals certificates in the MEP and the courses for one of the Core certificate. See Coursework Requirements for Certification below. Purchase of MEP access and coursework is required. (NOTE: The only core certificate currently available is Sales. Core coursework for the CI and CWS exams is currently only available through the textbook based study kits. Release dates for the core courses in the MEP are December 2014 and January 2015, respectively.)
  3. Pass the appropriate certification exam for the core certification title selected. Pre-registration is required for examination. Exams are available in public sessions and in private proctored sessions.

Coursework Requirements for Certification by Title:

1. Certified Water-treatment Representative (CWR, formerly CSR)

Complete all the learning activities associated with the Basics, Fundamentals, and Sales certificates in the Modular Education Program (click to purchase the MEP)

2. Certified Water Specialist (CWS)

Complete all the learning activities associated with the Basics, Fundamentals, and Design certificates in the Modular Education Program (click to purchase the MEP). Until the Design certificate is available, the CWS study kit may be used.

3. Certified Installer (CI)

Complete all the learning activities associated with the Basics, Fundamentals, and Installation certificates in the Modular Education Program (click to purchase the MEP). Until the Installation certificate is available, the CI study kit may be used.

4. Certified Service Technician (CST)

Complete all the learning activities associated with the Basics, Fundamentals, and Service certificates in the Modular Education Program (click to purchase the MEP). Note: the Service certificate will be available in April 2015. The CST exam will be available in June 2015.

Multiple Core Level Certification Titles

    Already certified personnel may obtain additional certification titles by completing the Core certificate relevant to the additional certification title and passing the appropriate exam. The requirements are listed below. Personnel grandfathered into the new requirements as of April 2015 may have to complete additional courses in the Fundamentals curriculum.

    1. Obtaining the additional CWS certification

    • CWR title holders who have achieved the Basics and Fundamentals certificates in the MEP will need to complete the Core:Design certificate to be eligible for the CWS exam. Note: Design Certificate will be available in January 2015.
    • Grandfathered CWR title holders must complete the Fundamentals certificate as well as the Core:Design certificate to be eligible for the CWS exam.
    • CI title holders who have achieved the Basics and Fundamentals certificates in the MEP will need to complete the Core:Design certificate to be eligible for the CWS exam.
    • Grandfathered CI title holders must complete the Fundamentals certificate as well as the Core:Design certificate to be eligible for the CWS exam.
    • CST title holders must complete the Core:Design certificate to be eligible for the CWS exam.

    2. Obtaining the additional CWR certification

    • CWS title holders, grandfathered or otherwise, must complete the Core:Sales certificate to be eligible for the CWR exam.
    • CI title holders who have achieved the Basics and Fundamentals certificates in the MEP will need to complete the Core:Sales certificate to be eligible for the CWR exam.
    • Grandfathered CI title holders must complete the Fundamentals certificate as well as the Core:Sales certificate to be eligible for the CWR exam.
    • CST title holders must complete the Core:Sales certificate to be eligible for the CWR exam.

    3. Obtaining the additional CI certification

    • CWR title holders who have achieved the Basics and Fundamentals certificates in the MEP will need to complete the Core:Installation certificate to be eligible for the CI exam.
    • Grandfathered CWR title holders must complete the Fundamentals certificate as well as the Core:Installation  certificate to be eligible for the CI exam.
    • CWS title holders who have achieved the Basics and Fundamentals certificates in the MEP will need to complete the Core:Installation certificate to be eligible for the CI exam.
    • Grandfathered CWS title holders must complete the Fundamentals certificate as well as the Core:Installation  certificate to be eligible for the CI exam.
    • CST title holders are not required to complete any additional coursework to be eligible for the CI exam.

     

    4.  Obtaining the additional CST certification

    • CWR title holders who have achieved the Basics and Fundamentals certificates in the MEP will need to complete the Core:Service certificate to be eligible for the CST exam.
    • Grandfathered CWR title holders must complete the Fundamentals certificate as well as the Core:Service certificate to be eligible for the CST exam.
    • CWS title holders who have achieved the Basics and Fundamentals certificates in the MEP will need to complete the Core:Service certificate to be eligible for the CST exam.
    • Grandfathered CWS title holders must complete the Fundamentals certificate as well as the Core:Service certificate to be eligible for the CST exam.
    • CI title holders who have achieved the Basics and Fundamentals certificates in the MEP will need to complete the Core:Service certificate to be eligible for the CST exam.
    • Grandfathered CI title holders must complete the Fundamentals certificate as well as the Core:Service certificate to be eligible for the CST exam.

        Master Level 

        CWS and CST title holders may continue to the corresponding master level titles, Master Water Specialist (MWS), and Master Service Technician (MST). Upon achievement, the master level titles will replace the core titles.

        1. Moving from CWS to MWS

        • CWS title holders who have achieved the Basics and Fundamentals certificates in the MEP will need to first complete the Advanced:Design certificate, then pass the two Advanced level exams, and meet additional experiential criteria that is currently under development.
        • Grandfathered CWS title holders must complete the Fundamentals certificate in addition to meeting the above requirements.

        2. Moving from CST to MST

        • CST title holders who have achieved the Basics and Fundamentals certificates in the MEP will need to first complete the Advanced:Service certificate, then pass the two Advanced level exams, and meet additional experiential criteria that is currently under development.
